Over 1,000 pensioners to receive financial boost for home carers
More elderly people using active ageing centres
More than 1,100 elderly people will be eligible for increased financial assistance of up to €9,000 under the home carer scheme this year.
The increase, first announced in the 2026 Budget, is aimed at supporting older people who choose to remain living in their own homes with the help of a carer.
Speaking on Friday, the Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said it offers concrete support to older people, allowing them to enjoy greater independence by remaining in the comfort of their own homes while having the companionship and assistance of a carer at all times.
He also announced that the Active Ageing Centre in Dingli will be renovated in the near future.
“There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the number of elderly people making use of the services and schemes offered by Active Ageing and Community Care continue to grow. This demand encourages us to keep looking at other services and schemes we can offer to reach even more elderly people in our communities,” Agius Galea said.
Some 3,300 elderly people attended Active Ageing Centres last year, figure that is set to exceed 4,300 this year.
The Chief Executive of Active Ageing and Community Care Steve Agius said this increase was the result of work carried out in the centres. He added that the elderly will also have access to more training opportunities in various fields in future.
Agius said the organisation’s goal remains to ensure that, through a wide range of community services, older people continue to live active lives in the comfort of their homes.
