Modest and laid back, the title of fastest man in the world is certain to fit comfortably with Jamaica's Asafa Powell. The 22-year-old turned his sparkling early-season form into history on Tuesday, blazing to a world record of 9.77 seconds on a balmy night in Athens. In shaving one hundredth of a second off Tim Montgomery's previous world best, Powell confirmed his rapid rise to the sprinting elite. Powell hails from a family of athletes, with five of his brothers having stepped on to the track as sprinters at some level.
