Health Minister Joseph Cassar told Parliament yesterday that during 2009 there were 143 reported cases of sexually-transmitted diseases. Among these STDs, 61 were cases of chlamydia, 63 of gonorrhea and 19 of syphilis.

Comparing the figure to those of the last five years, Dr Cassar said there had been an increase in the reported cases. The minister also said that there were 12 cases of HIV. The Health Promotion Unit was planning to continue with its educational campaigns about sexual health as well as STDs. The budget allocated was €42,000, part of which came from the EU.

The Health Promotion Department was looking at employing a number of health promotion officers, one of which would be working specifically on sexual health.

Dr Cassar was answering a number of questions by Anthony Agius Decelis (PL).
