A total of 125 prison inmates are currently attending some form of in-house educational course, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said this afternoon.
Lectures are given in a variety of subjects including IT, languages and even law.
Mr Abela was speaking during an award ceremony for 13 inmates who completed a six-week course on behaviour and skills management organised in collaboration with NGO Mid-Dlam Ghad-Dawl.
He said that nine inmates had been granted study leave to follow courses in tourism, engineering and the maritime sector. In addition 32 inmates were doing some form of community work with local councils or religious institutions.
The Home Affairs Minister praised the NGO's efforts, but remarked that society in general was also had to do its part by giving a second chance to those willing to rehabilitate themselves.
