A total of 131 Eritreans currently in Malta had applied for refugee status, Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said yesterday.

Figures he gave in parliament show the Eritreans in question included 96 men, 18 women and 17 children. Some had their request rejected and had appealed while others were still awaiting a decision. So far two men born in Eritrea had been recognised as refugees, Dr Borg said in answer to a question by Nationalist MP Michael Bonnici.
