Malta registered 187 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, as virus testing rates hit their second-highest daily total.

Two patients died over the past 24 hours, health authorities reported. The victims were a 79-year-old woman and a 91-year-old man. Both died at Mater Dei Hospital while COVID-19 positive, meaning the virus death toll now stands at 244.

The new cases were detected from 3,879 swab tests – the second highest amount of tests carried out in a single day.

189 virus patients recovered overnight.

Meanwhile, authorities said that a total of 14276 vaccine doses had been administered by Tuesday. That means that healthcare workers administered 1,274 vaccines that day.
