While recessionary pressures have continued to negatively impact the global economy in 2009, the main challenge ahead was to remain positive at all times in the way 2010 was approached, the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions said in a message for the new year.

"Whether we discuss energy tariffs, national reform or pre-budget documents at MCESD or politics if it matters, all stakeholders are expected to be at their best taking a mature and positive approach when engaging in debate showing great responsibility and integrity and being highly accountable at all times.

"This will help all stakeholders to engage better and will enhance the possibility of getting agreement and consensus on issues which normally would not lack extreme controversy but which are very important to crucial decision making.

"CMTU appeals to all stakeholders to show good character with good work for more understanding and more focus on what Malta really needs to achieve."

It said that 2010 would not be any easy year but with national interest at heart and with discipline and perseverance, all stakeholders could collectively and very positively help the nation to take ‘head on’ the challenges coming Malta’s way with a brave and optimistic approach.

"CMTU and its affiliates are always ready," the confederation said.
