A total of 21,000 Maltese nationals have applied for the E111 form since May 1, according to the Malta-EU Information Centre.

The E111 form gives people the right to be treated as a citizen of that country when seeking treatment at a state hospital or clinic, in case of injury while on holiday abroad. This right is recognised in all the 25 countries that are now part of the European Union.

Copies of the form are obtainable from the Entitlement Unit at 23, St John Street, Valletta or through the website.
