The number of reported accidents in the third quarter this year reached 3,637, a marginal increase of 24 over the same quarter last year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.
A total of 182 drivers sustained injuries as a result of traffic accidents; of these, 140 were slight injuries and the other 42 suffered either grievous or fatal injuries.
During the same period, 92 pedestrians and 107 passengers were injured.
The number of slightly injured persons in the third quarter of 2003 totalled 280; of these, 160 were males and 120 were females.
In the 15-24 and 25-39 year age groups, 73 and 41 males respectively suffered injuries.
The number of injured females in the same age groups reached 57 and 39 respectively. There were 113 casualties in the 15-24 years age group; 84 of them occurring to passenger car travellers.
Persons sustaining grievous and fatal injuries totalled 78; 56 were males and 22 were females. There were four traffic deaths in this quarter, two males and two females.
In the period under review, 5.1 per cent of the casualties were caused by passenger cars and 14.5 per cent were caused by motorcycles.
