A record 3,959 operations were performed at Mater Dei Hospital in October, 375 more than in the same month in 2010, Health Minister Joseph Cassar said today.
He said that the daily average number of operations has now risen to 128.
The October total consisted of 3,374 planned operations and 585 emergency surgeries.
Dr Cassar thanked the medical staff and said more effective use is being made of the operating theatres.
He said the number of specialised foreign surgeons working at Mater Dei has been increased.
A total of 36,489 operations were performed between January and October, compared to 32,764 in the last full year of St Luke's Hospital.
