48-year-old woman drowns in St George's Bay

The woman was with a 23-year-old who was hospitalised

A 48-year-old woman from Kyrgyzstan died on Sunday after getting into difficulty in the sea at St George’s Bay.

A 23-year-old woman who was with her, and who is also from Kyrgyzstan, was hospitalised.

In a statement, the police said they were informed of the incident at around 12.40pm. Initial investigations found that several passers-by helped the two women get out of the sea and offered assistance.

A medical team and Civil Protection officers later arrived and helped get the women on an ambulance and to Mater Dei Hospital.

“Later, unfortunately, the 48-year-old woman was certified to have died, while the other person is in a stable condition,” police said.

An inquiry headed by Magistrate Franco Agius is ongoing alongside a police investigation.

In 2025, 11 people died at sea.
