About 50 billboards mounted illegally along arterial roads were removed by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority over the past few days.

The environment and development watchdog said billboards were removed from St Paul's Bay, Naxxar, Swieqi, St Julians, Zebbug, Qormi, Luqa, Mosta and Attard late at night or early in the morning in order to reduce the chances of traffic congestion. It said more billboards put up illegally would be removed in the coming days.

Mepa said it had also sealed off an illegal extension to a kitchen in a restaurant in Qui-Si-Sana, Sliema. An illegally-erected glass frame was removed by the restaurant's owner.
