The General Workers' Union has expressed concern over the level of employment in the textile manufacturing sector with 500 jobs lost since the beginning of the year.

In a statement, the GWU said that this year has been extremely negative for the textile manufacturing sector. It said that in the beginning of the year Bogner Sport closed down, dismissing 120 employees.

In February Peter Blond International dismissed 50 employees. In July Medwear Clothing closed its doors and 160 workers lost their job. On the same day, Estro Clothing dismissed 50 workers.

The GWU said that last month Estro Clothing dismissed another 40 employees and Peter Blond International has informed its 85 employees that it will close down.

The union said the situation in other textile companies was very serious. It said it was becoming very difficult for these workers to find alternative jobs and has asked the government to intervene and take the necessary decisions to assist the sector to remain competitive.
