Police stopped almost 8,000 vehicles in December roadchecks

Four people found to be driving under the influence

Over 500 fines were issued to motorists during roadchecks between December 1 and 30, and four people were found to be driving under the influence.

A total of 7,932 vehicles were stopped during 271 roadchecks.

The police said in a statement that the absolute majority of motorists were following traffic rules, however, officials issued 513 fines and 123 charges.

Two motorists were arrested during two separate inspections. 

One of them did not stop the vehicle when asked to and drove dangerously. He then abandoned the car on the side of the road and fled the scene, but was later apprehended. 

He pleaded guilty in court and will be sentenced in the coming days.

In a separate incident, a motorist was caught driving without a licence twice in one day. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. 

The police noted that such inspections are carried out daily and also at night to ensure the safety of road users.
