New Kirkop park to get treehouses, play areas and 55 mature trees

Environment Ministry pledges new park will be a 'peaceful ecological haven'

A new park being developed in Kirkop will have 55 mature trees planted in it, the government said on Tuesday as it provided further details about the development announced last year.

The new trees will join existing carob and olive trees at the site, which will be kept in place.

In a statement, the Environment Ministry said the plot of land on Triq Nerik Xerri, which it said had had “once been earmarked for development", would be turned into a “peaceful ecological haven” under Project Green.

The 1,600 square metre site will, when completed, feature “interactive and educational spaces” including treehouses, play areas, structures supporting pollination and “aromatic herb areas”.

The ministry said that “significant progress has already been achieved, including the completion of major structural wall works and the construction of the reservoir” at the site.

Recyclable materials will be used in the development of the park, and more than 55 mature trees will be planted, the ministry said, adding that a solar-powered automatic irrigation system would be installed, with other features also solar-powered.

The Kirkop development was announced by the government in February last year, with the project receiving a green light from authorities in November of the same year.

Project manager Dylan Abela Spiteri said the vision for the space “goes beyond simply creating an open space, we aim to establish a vibrant community hub where people can come together”.

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli, meanwhile, said the project reflected the government's “commitment to greener areas and a future where every community has access to sustainable and recreational environments”.
