€730,000 for Naxxar housing project for rehabilitated drug users
The housing units will be managed by Caritas Malta
The Housing Authority has invested €730,000 into a building project for women who are trying to get back on their feet following drug and substance abuse.
The project is being run by Caritas Malta, which will also manage the building, once completed, and the services offered to women who will be allowed to reside there for up to two years.
At these residences, rehabilitated drug users will be guided on how to reintegrate within the community, finding a job and becoming independent.
Mothers, their children and youths will be given priority at these housing units in Naxxar.
The project forms part of the Housing Authority's efforts to invest in specialised housing units.
During a site visit, Housing Minister Roderick Galdes said the project was proof of successful collaboration between governmental institutions and the voluntary sector.
Caritas Malta director Anthony Gatt, meanwhile, noted that the Housing Authority's financial contribution and collaboration will result in critical support for rehabilitated drug users. It will provide these people with a strong foundation on which they can rebuild their lives, he said.
