76 people arrested for living in Malta irregularly to be deported

Arrests made after inspections on buses across the country

Police have arrested 76 people found to be living or working in the country irregularly.

In a statement Monday, the police said the arrests followed inspections on several buses across the country "in recent days".

People from Syria, Nigeria, Gambia, Ghana, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Serbia were arrested in the operations carried out by the police, Agency for Detention Services, Transport Malta, JobsPlus and Identità.

Those arrested are being held in a detention centre until they are deported to their country of origin.

The police said it would "continue with this intensive work in the coming days and weeks”.
