An extensive collective art exhibition is presently showing at the premises of the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. The exhibition was organised to showcase the works of the participants in the ninth national competition organised by the same society.

Curated by E. V. Borg, the exhibition represents a cross-section of talent and ability – an all-inclusive drive by the society to help emerging artists and newcomers as well as a sprinkling of wellknown names.

As many as 115 works by no fewer than 85 artists are on display. These include 86 paintings and 29 sculptures. Although a shortlisting of works would have raised the general level, the society preferred to show the works of all participants to further encourage some of its students.

The winners and honourable mentions were chosen by a panel of judges made up of two artists, a photographer, an art critic and an art connoisseur.

The first prize in the painting section was awarded to Sue Flask for the work titled Joaaeefoa; Jesmond Dalmas won the first honourable mention with Sensacion de Rojo; Jude Zammit won the second honourable mention with Joy of Life; Sean Camilleri was awarded first prize in the sculpture section with his piece Untitled, a social comment with an explicit message; Egeo Baldacchino won the first honourable mention with his piece titled Serena, in polished wood and Martin Bezzina Wettinger won the second honourable mention with George – My Father-in-Law.

After several years of serious effort by the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, events like this vast array of painting and sculpture competition and exhibition are leaving their desired effect – imbuing artists with enthusiasm and application, and inculcating self-esteem.

The Society of Arts Manufactures and Commerce teaches art at its premises and many of its students make it a point to participate in such an event.

The exhibition runs till October 16.
