Over 9,700 students receive MATSEC results

Free revision classes to begin on July 22

More than 9,700 students in Malta and Gozo have received their MATSEC results, the Education Ministry announced on Wednesday.

Some 4,148 candidates received their Matriculation Certificate results, and 5,573 students obtained their Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) results.

The statement came a day after several government e-ID websites, including MATSEC, were impacted by an outage lasting around five hours.

The statement read that in core subjects, such as Maths, English and Maltese, the number of candidates achieving Level 3 remained stable compared with previous years.

Subjects including Chemistry, Computing, Geography and Dance recorded an increase in the number of students obtaining an SEC qualification at Level 3.

In the statement, Education Minister  Byron Camilleri congratulated the students who achieved the results they had hoped for in these examinations, describing the exams as an important milestone. He also encouraged those who wish to obtain better results to not give up, and that they will receive the support they need.

“Our commitment remains to create an environment in which students can fulfil their potential and develop all their skills,” Minister Camilleri said.

This is the second year that the SEC exam results include a School-Based Assessment (SBA) accounting for 30% of the final mark. The SBA is based on students' work in the last two years of secondary school, including projects, oral presentations, class tests and other forms of continuous assessment.

Candidates had the option of either of two exam levels, level 2-3 as in previous years and level 1-2 aimed at certifying a basic level for those who would have concluded the scholastic year.

Level 3 remains the level needed for students to move to post-secondary education. Levels 1 and 2 may suffice when a good grade is obtained in the school-based assessment.

Revision classes will be held for students who have not achieved their grades.

Free revision classes to run for five weeks

In a seperate statement, Employment Minister Jonathan Attard said applications for the free SEC revision classes have reopened.

The classes are organised through the Youth Guarantee project and co-financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund Plus.

The classes will be for students who plan to resit Biology, English, Maltese, Maths and Physics exams this September.

The classes will begin on July 22 and run for five weeks. Students aged between 15 and 29 who did not achieve Level 3, received a 'U', or were marked absent in any of the five subjects during the May 2026 session are eligible to apply.

Students may attend these classes at one of the following centres: MCAST Mosta, the Msida Lifelong Learning Centre, MCAST Paola, and Gozo College in Victoria, Gozo. They may choose to attend classes in a maximum of three subjects, including one science subject, either Biology or Physics.

Attard described the classes as a concrete example of how investment in young people is continuing to provide them with the support they need to reach their potential.

“We believe that one result does not define a student’s potential. We will therefore continue investing in initiatives that offer a second chance, with practical support that helps more young people achieve their educational goals and continue progressing,” Minister Attard said.

Students may apply online by visiting this website.  Applications will remain open until 17 July, while late applications will be accepted until 24 July.
