Without entering into the merit regarding the etymology of Carnival which since time immemorial was a pre-Lenten jovial occurrence, the idea of holding three annual carnivals merits further discussion.
The historic Grand Harbour sets the plan for a Water Carnival, complete with among other components, triumphal floats, decorated dgħajjes, introduced by the popular Ġostra, ideally tallying with the September 8 weekend.
The route from Marsa to the old Customs House should draw enthusiastic crowds who would certainly enjoy a different experience in the Maltese calendar of events. The sea around these islands sees only the traditional regattas in the historic harbour. A Water Carnival should complement the limited offshore events in Malta.
