Exactly one year ago I was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital with pneumonia and was kept in for a week. As always, the care and attention was outstanding. It was the sharp eye of the radiologist who spotted a mass on my lung.

After CT scans and finally a PET scan and a bronchoscopy, it was confirmed to be cancer. The next few weeks consisted of discussions on the best procedure. It was decided that an operation was out of the question because the tumor was close to some major blood vessels. Radiotherapy seemed to be the best option. Just the thought of that petrified me. Precision was paramount due it being so close to my heart.

After meeting with the oncologist this fear practically disappeared. His calm and reassuring manner put me in a very positive state. I was to have 30 sessions.

I arranged with the hospital to have late afternoon appointments so that I could go to work. Now the most important part is to say thank you to all the radiographers for all their patience, understanding and positive attitude. I sailed through my treatment.

A recent scan showed the demon has gone. I was one of the lucky ones as it was spotted early. I was amazed at how many new cases showed up each week. My heart goes out to them, hoping that they will be as lucky as me. They are in the very best hands at the Oncology Centre.
