Two Żebbuġ band clubs have launched the first salvos in a legal battle over which of them is the oldest. Apparently backed up by a plethora of “authentic” documents, St Philip Band Club AD 1851 took exception to billboards erected by St Joseph Club and De Rohan Band in which they claimed to be the first band club to set up in Malta.
The three billboards, in St Phillip Square, at the De Rohan Arch and at the roundabout in front of St Dorothy’s College in the same village, contained incorrect and misleading information, St Phillip Band Club said in a judicial protest. It insisted it had documents to prove the club dated back to 1851 and was, therefore, the oldest in the country.
The club called on its rivals to “desist” from saying they were the first band club in Malta.
