Champions Valletta last night finalised discussions with former captain Gilbert Agius to become their new coach.

In the last few days, Agius, 40, emerged as favourite to succeed Andre Paus who last week was appointed coach of Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta.

Regarded as one of the best and most successful players in the history of Valletta, Agius was part of the club’s backroom staff in the last two seasons, first as first-team assistant coach under Mark Miller and, for the last three months of the outgoing season, under Paus.

Agius made some appearances for Xewkija Tigers in 2013/14, helping them to win the GFA title but his appointment as Valletta coach effectively brings the curtains down on his decorated playing career.

Contacted by Times of Malta last night, Victor Sciriha, the Valletta FC president, confirmed that Agius is the club’s new coach after signing a three-year contract.

Valletta, who won a league and cup double in the season just ended, are expected to start their pre-season in the first week of June ahead of their commitments in the UEFA Champions League.
