Rock band Airport Impressions’ single Berlin won first place in the Adult Album Alternative category of this year’s edition of Unsigned Only.
Unsigned Only is a music competition for solo artists and bands who are unsigned to a major label. Some 8,000 entries took part in this year’s edition.
Participating bands and musicians were judged by a panel of high-profile artists and journalists that included Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis, NME deputy editor Lucy Jone, The Cure frontman Robert Smith and The Guardian music editor Michael Hann.
“We have never had a first-place winner from Malta before and we are thrilled that Airport Impressions is the first. They are such a talented band and we are confid-ent that they have a great future,” organisers Jim Morgan and Candace Avery said.
Airport Impressions has clocked up countless radio hits, including Borderline, Wake Up, Walk With Me and, more recently, Hymns of June and the winning song, Berlin.
Maltese artists Chris & Cheryl, who also took part in the competition, were awarded an Honourable Mention in the Adult Contemporary category with their song Calling Out My Name.
