An alleged serial thief whose still image from CCTV footage made the rounds on social media has been apprehended by the police.
The Polish man would allegedly walk around with his mobile to his ear and pinch items from unattended bags in offices and other premises in Paceville and St Julian’s, sources said.
IT developer Januariusz Cholaszczynski, 53, who claimed to be in Malta on a “short stay”, was charged with three thefts. He was accused of stealing items, including a camera, a laptop and wallets, from St Julian’s and Paceville in November and February. His alleged victims were students in language schools and tourists staying at the George Hotel.
The police caught up with him on Saturday when he allegedly attempted to withdraw €500 from a Bank of Valletta ATM using a stolen card.
Appearing before Magistrate Carol Peralta, he denied the charges brought against him. He was denied bail and remanded in custody.
Lawyer Cedric Mifsud appeared for Mr Cholaszczynski.
