Obituary

EBEJER. On August 30, at Mater Dei Hospital, MARIA née Azzarello, of Paola, residing at Żejtun Home for the Elderly, widow of Joseph, aged 94, passed away peacefully, comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her loss Mary, widow of her son Antoine, Lino and his wife Rina, Josephine and her husband Anthony Cuschieri, John and his wife Miriam, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives in Malta and France, and friends. Mass præsente cadavere will be celebrated today at 2 p.m. at St Anthony church, Għajn Dwieli, Paola. Lord, grant her eternal rest.

MELI. On August 30, at St James (Capua) Hospital, Sliema EDWIN L.P., aged 86, comforted by the rites of Holy Mother Church. He leaves to mourn his irreparable loss his wife of 60 years Miriam, his beloved children Joanna, Adrian and his wife Mylene and Stephen, his grandchildren Alexia and her husband Mark Vella, Mark and Sacha, Sean, Hannah, Sascha and Edward, his great-grandchildren Sophie and Sienna, his brother John and his wife Josephine and his sister-in-law Josephine Milanes, nephews and neices besides other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves St James (Capua) Hospital, Sliema tomorrow at 9 a.m. for Stella Maris parish church, Sliema where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 9.30 a.m. followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery (entrance through top gate). No flowers by request but donations to the Poor Clares, St Julians would be greatly appreciated. Special thanks go to his personal carers, the management and staff at Casa Antonia and St James Capua Hospital, Sliema, for their dedicated care. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors. Lord, grant him eternal rest.

WHITE. On August 30, at Mater Dei Hospital, THOMAS, aged 85, passed away peacefully comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his beloved wife Tessie, his daughters Cynthia and her husband David Gutteridge, Moira and her husband Paul Vella, his grandchildren Kurt and Corissa, his brothers and sisters, other relatives and friends. The funeral leaves Mater Dei Hospital tomorrow at 8.15 a.m. for Massiliano Kolbe church, Buġibba, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 9 a.m. followed by interment at the family grave at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Id-Dar tal-Providenza will be appreciated.

Restoration camp 2011

Din l-Art Ħelwa will again be holding a restoration camp, which this year will take place at Torri Mamo between September 9-19. The 1657 fortified country home, which commands views overlooking St Thomas Bay is held in guardianship by DLĦ and is unique in that it has 16 sides and an internal circular domed hall.

The programme will be focusing on the restoration of fortifications and, in particular, on stone deterioration. There will be workshops and on-the-job training under the supervision of qualified restorers.

Participants will be given the opportunity to network with volunteers from France who will be dedicating time to learn and carry out hands-on restoration work. Free time will be filled with cultural visits and fun activities.

Traffic diversion in Ta’ Xbiex

Part of Abate Rigord Street in Ta’ Xbiex will be closed to traffic because of resurfacing works in the stretch from the corner with Princess Margaret Street up to Ta’ Xbiex Seafront tomorrow and Friday between 8 p.m. and 5.30 a.m.

Parking will not be permitted along both sides of the road. Traffic and public transport from The Strand in Gżira towards Valletta will be diverted to Ta’ Xbiex Seafront.

Traffic from Princess Margaret Street will be diverted to the lower part of Abate Rigord Street.

Motorists are advised to proceed with caution. Any inconvenience is regretted.

Sliema Band in Żurrieq

The Sliema Band will perform band marches in Żurrieq on Saturday from 7.30 p.m. for the feast of St Catherine, conducted by Maestro Ronnie Debattista.
