A “substantial number” of inmates applied for parole after the Restorative Justice Act came into effect in January, introducing a system that grants earlier release to prisoners on certain conditions.

The Home Affairs Ministry, which made the announcement, did not say how many applications were made.

It said that the entry into force of the Restorative Justice Act was “a major step in the right direction” for Corradino Correctional Facility prisoners.

An Offender Assessment Board and a Parole Board are being set up in terms of the law.
