Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Mercieca will on Thursday be celebrating 60 years as a priest, with a thanksgiving Mass organised by the Cathedral Chapter at the Mdina Cathedral at 6 p.m.

Mgr Mercieca was ordained by Bishop Joseph Pace on March 8, 1952, in Gozo. He was rector of the Gozo Seminary from 1959 to 1969 when he was appointed Judge of the Sacred Romana Rota, before moving up the ranks. He was appointed Archbishop on December 12, 1976 and headed the Archdiocese of Malta until January 27, 2007 when he presided over the Episcopal ordination of Archbishop Paul Cremona.
