A man who allegedly tried to escape arrest after police officers found a bullet in his car was arraigned yesterday.

Anton Agius, 31, of Żebbuġ, pleaded not guilty to resisting police officers at about 1 a.m. yesterday in Parish Street, Żebbuġ and at the Floriana police headquarters.

A man was noticed driving suspiciously by members of the mobile squad who followed him, sources said. When they tried to approach him, the suspect panicked and tried to flee.

He was arrested and taken to the headquarters where he tried to assault officers, sources said.

Mr Agius pleaded not guilty to assaulting and resisting police officers and disobeying their orders. He also pleaded not guilty to being in possession of ammunition without a licence and to relapsing.

He was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000.

Police Inspector Michael Mallia prosecuted.
