Malta should be grateful indeed to Zdzislaw Bieganski for his very generous offer to exhibit his priceless and vast collection of art works in Malta (May 15).
... it would be an added attraction to... tourists...- Anthony Scicluna, Victoria
Unlike Malta, Gozo lacks the auberges, palaces and magnificent residences as well museums in which different works of art can be seen. Most of the art works in Gozo are found in churches and some in a few small museums.
So it would be a very important cultural upgrade for Gozo if Mr Bieganski’s collection were to be housed on this island. Such a public museum would certainly help, especially the Gozitan younger generations to better appreciate art. The collection would still be within easy reach of the Maltese public. There can be no doubt that it would be an added attraction for various tourists coming over to Gozo as well and could be included in the publicity for the island.
It may be possible to refurbish the old MMU depot on the outskirts of Victoria in a short time and turn it into a modern museum suitable for these art works. Another storey can be added, if necessary. EU funds may be available for part of the cost of its development while maintenance can eventually be recovered from a moderate entrance fee charged to tourists. It is hoped that the authorities, local councils and NGOs in Gozo will take up this suggestion and try to bring over this cultural asset to the island.
