Alison Borg and Gertrude Zarb launched their commitments in the women’s beachvolley tournament in Luxembourg yesterday with 2-0 win over Monaco duo Magali Muratore and Camille Orengo.

The first set lasted only 16 minutes. The Maltese pair opened a 14-7 lead midway through before extending their advantage to 17-9, eventually winning with a score of 21-10 to go one up at the La Coque Arena sports complex.

The second set was more balanced as Monaco began to close all gaps inside their zone. However, Borg and Zarb then opened a two-point gap (17-15) at a crucial stage of the match and preserved their advantage for a 21-19 win.

The encounter was over in 36 minutes.

In other women’s event matches, Liechtenstein had the better of Iceland 2-0 (21-9, 21-12) and hosts Luxembourg downed Andorra in straight sets (21-12, 21-13).

The other team in the women’s competition are Cyprus. They play Malta today at 1pm in their final group match.

The semi-finals and classi-fication matches will take place on Friday.
