The Seabank Resort and Spa in Mellieħa is considering what compensation to offer a 30-year-old French tourist who was accidentally burnt at its restaurant flambé station on Sunday night.
A hotel spokesman said the Frenchman, who suffered second degree burns on his left arm and abdomen, was more than a metre away from the station when his clothes caught fire.
“We do not know exactly what happened and are looking into the matter. We have had a flambé station and have been cooking in front of our patrons for years and we cannot understand how this has happened,” he said.
At the time, the chefs were preparing the last batch of rum babas and pears where alcohol is traditionally added to the pan to create a burst of flames.
The Frenchman, who was on holiday with his wife and daughter, reportedly left Malta yesterday.
“Guests are very important to us and, much as this is an unfortunate accident, we’re taking all the necessary measures,” a hotel representative added.
