A couple were lucky to escape unhurt yesterday after part of the ceiling of their house in Birkirkara caved in just as the island was being shaken awake by the clapping of a thunderstorm.

The incident happened in the early hours on High Street , during the four hours when the island was drowning under 22.2mm of rainfall. The Civil Protection Department assisted some drivers whose cars had stalled in Valley Road, Msida and warned motorists to stay away from flood prone areas.

Morning traffic jams built up as a result of flooded streets.
