Go’s engineering, IT and project coordination teams were recently tasked with overcoming some difficult technical challenges for charity.
Go had to lay down fibre from Rabat to Verdala Palace for the President’s fundraiser, L-Istrina. This remote location had no services.
Cables were laid out to provide the infrastructure to support telecom services including hot lines, pledge lines, general lines with ‘hunting’ facility, SMS donation lines and mobile connections, data connections for high-speed ADSL, a whole internet exchange for the palace as well as a base station for mobile services.
It took a team of 10 people weeks to install everything after the cable was laid.
Go also had to set up 25 telephone donation lines for RTK’s donation campaign in aid of Dar tal-Providenza.
Another challenge was connecting four interactive star-shaped billboards to the internet via wifi. These billboards were not placed near ADSL connections and they are being moved every two months over a six-month period.
“Each site is different and has its own problems and solutions, so we had to use a very flexible approach to ensure we could power up all the stars,” said project coordinator Joe Muscat said.
