A man was remanded in custody yesterday after he was charged with holding his wife against her will, just 10 days after being released from prison and breaching a protection order against her and their children.

Julian Genovese, 51, pleaded not guilty to holding his wife against her will when he grabbed her face and pushed her on Friday at 12.30 p.m. in San Ġwann.

Prosecuting inspectors Godwin Scerri and Luke Bonello said Mr Genovese was a “danger to his wife” and had approached her even though a court had imposed a three-year protection order on her and their children.

The incident also took place just 10 days after Mr Genovese was released from prison after he had been jailed for domestic violence, police said.

Legal aid lawyer Martin Cutajar said Mr Genovese had resolved his differences with his children but wanted to speak to his wife.

In a separate arraignment, an Ethiopian immigrant was jailed for three months after he pleaded guilty to using a passport that belonged to someone else.

Muftah Jubier, 21, admitted to trying to leave Malta on Friday with a passport which, he claimed, he had found.
