Malta swimmer Andrew Chetcuti fell just short of a second national record at the World Championships in Kazan, yesterday.

Earlier this week, Chetcuti established a new benchmark when clocking 51.35secs in 100m freestyle but he could only manage 23.43secs over the one-lap sprint, fractionally slower than the 23.17secs record he set in the Iceland GSSE, in June.

Chetcuti was classified 46th in the men’s 50m freestyle general overview that had an entry list of 120 swimmers. Nathan Adrian, of the US, topped the semi-finals charts with a fast 21.37secs.

Today, Amy Micallef swims in the 50m breaststroke qualifiers and Nicola Muscat takes part in the 50m freestyle heats.
