A German woman and an Angolan man were yesterday each jailed six years and fined €23,000 for smuggling drugs into Malta in separate cases.

The German woman, Brig-itte Malwal, 31, was carrying 440 grams of cocaine, some of which she had swallowed in 30 capsules.

In the bill of indictment, the Attorney General said she had conspired with three persons with the specific intention of bringing the cocaine in from Spain on October 21, 2009.

The four had met near a metro station in Valencia where they discussed a drug deal that was meant to take the accused to Italy. But the plans were changed and it was decided to have her come to Malta.

On arrival she was taken to a hotel in Buġibba where she was given instructions to wait for a person named Izuchuckwu Nwakaeze to pick up the drugs. She was to expect payment of between €500 and €600. The police raided her room and found drug capsules.

In the second case, Louis Miguel Da Silva Simues Rosa, 35, was caught at the airport on November 2, 2009 after flying in from Brussels.

He was found to be carrying cocaine hidden in the false bottom of a pair of shoes in his bag, the Attorney General said in the bill of indictment.

Mr Rosa had conspired with another man to start taking drugs to Malta on payment of €1,000.
