The Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry has expressed concern over increased cargo handling charges, saying this would harm Malta’s competitiveness.
The chamber was reacting to news that Valletta Gateway Terminal (VGT), had decided to raise charges, applicable from September 1. Transport Malta on Tuesday also objected to the planned increases.
The chamber said Malta’s physical isolation and minute domestic economy meant international business activity was key to economic survival.
“Cost-effective and competitive communication with other countries, especially at port level, is of fundamental importance. In a post-recession scenario, the country must refrain from placing further self-induced obstacles on its competitiveness,” it said.
It therefore urged Transport Malta to vigorously continue to object to the planned increases.
