Liquigas yesterday launched a scathing attack on gas distributors, accusing them of attempting to again “hold Malta hostage to an unacceptable monopolistic practice”.

The gas supplier said distributors’ representative, the Chamber for Small and Medium Enterprises – GRTU, was “intensifying its efforts, with the onset of the cold season”.

“The GRTU is preparing to repeat the difficulties experienced towards the end of last year, possibly in a more aggressive manner, in order to exploit their monopoly and restrict this essential service to consumers,” Liquigas charged.

The last serious strike occurred last December when distributors refused to deliver gas cylinders over a dispute with Liquigas.

At the time, the company was refusing to furnish distributors with its gas cylinders if they also planned to carry those of its competitor Easygas.

The distributors, on the other hand, argued that they had a right to carry anyone’s cylinders and insisting on their exclusive rights over distribution.

But Liquigas yesterday stressed that it should have the right to distribute its own cylinders or find new suppliers.

“Gas distributors... cannot dictate to the consumer or the supplier. If the market is unsatisfied with their service, it cannot be held hostage to their whims or practices but be able to seek better service,” Liquigas said.
