The Azerbaijan contingent wave to the crowd during the opening ceremony of the European Games in Baku yesterday. Europe’s first multi-sports event was off to a glamorous start in a ceremony which was attended by Azeri President Ilham Aliyev along with International Olympic Committee head Thomas Bach and European Olympic Committee chief Patrick Hickey. The Malta contingent, formed by 59 athletes, was led into the stadium by waterpolo player Ben Plumpton who was the team’s flagbearer yesterday. Over 6,000 athletes from 50 nations are taking part in the Games.
