The former 7-Up factory in Sta Venera will be demolished and replaced with 125 apartments after the planning authority gave its go-ahead yesterday.

The unanimous decision was taken after the applicant downsized the project and removed all the semi-basement apartments and some penthouses and increased public open spaces and parking.

In July 2010, the planning authority board turned down a full development application to build 164 apartments, saying the proposed project would be too crowded.

The planning authority board imposed a €30,000 bank guarantee to ensure that all works follow the permit conditions. The site, which covers over 7,000 square metres, is located in the heart of Sta Venera with frontages overlooking St Joseph High Road, close to Wignacourt Aqueducts, Parade Street and Qormi Road.

The bottling plant, owned by Portanier Brothers, has been unused since it was closed in 2002 when Farsons took over the soft drink franchise.
