Maltese FIFA referee Marco Borg has been appointed to control today’s semi-final game between Brazil and hosts South Korea at the World University Games, the Malta FA announced yesterday.
The other semi-final, between Japan and Italy, will be officiated by FIFA referee Fernando Falce, from Uruguay.
Both matches are being played at the Yeonggwang Stadium in Gwangju.
Borg has already taken charge of two games at the University Games, Japan vs Brazil (1-0) and Taipei vs China (1-2). He also acted as fourth official in two other games, Japan vs Iran (2-1) and Brazil vs Iran (5-2).
“It is an enormous satisfaction for me as well as for Maltese refereeing to have been selected from a pool of 15 international referees to officiate this important semi-final,” Borg was quoted as saying in the MFA statement.
“My colleagues in Gwangju come from bigger countries, such as Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Mexico and Japan.”
Adrian Casha, the Malta FA director of refereeing, welcomed the news of Borg’s appointment for today’s semi-final.
“The success of our match officials abroad strengthens the belief that the MFA is reaping the fruit of its huge investment in refereeing,” Casha said.
