St Patrick Żabbar, Mdina Knights and Għargħur opened their commitments on a sound footing as the BOV Division Two kicked off last weekend.

Mqabba and Dingli Swallows, the two teams relegated from Division One last season, endured a rough introduction to life in the second division after suffering defeats to Senglea Athletic and Pembroke respectively.

Żabbar were off to a flier after netting three goals in the opening half-hour to see off Marsa 3-0 at the Luxol Ground.

Thomas Caruana was the protagonist for the Saints as he scored a brace on 11 and 27 minutes, the second from a penalty. Shalon Diacono grabbed the third goal in the 23rd minute.

Żabbar finished the match with 10 men after goalkeeper Jonathan Grech was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the area on 73 minutes.

Newly promoted Mdina Knights scored two second-half goals to beat Kirkop United 2-0.

After a goalless first half at the Mosta Ground, Mdina finally got the breakthrough on the hour through a Justin Buhagiar penalty.

In stoppage time, Emilio Cornago San Pedro sealed the points for Mdina who had Karl Grech dismissed for dissent just before the final whistle.

Għargħur obtained the biggest win of the opening programme after brushing aside newly-promoted Marsaskala 4-1.

Goals from Wayne Sciberras (20) and Matthew Agius (45) put the Northerners on their way in the first half.

Marsaskala pulled one back two minutes into the second half through Toraino Shaquene Singleton.

But there was no stopping Għargħur who wrapped up the points with late goals from Lydon Cilia (77) and Sciberras (88).

Pembroke Athleta came from a goal down to overcome Dingli Swallows at the Luxol Stadium.

Lyden Micallef opened the scoring for Dingli on 31 minutes.

Pembroke made a bold reaction after half-time and goals from Nicholas Zammit (52) and Daniel Calleja Cremona three minutes from time earned them the spoils.

Division Three champions Senglea Athletic launched their campaign with a 4-2 win over Mqabba in a thrilling encounter at the Sirens Stadium.

Marco Milutinovic put the Cottonera side ahead after 18 minutes before Mauro Bonnici levelled the scores on 51 minutes.

Senglea regained the lead through Trevor Thomas on 57 minutes but barely a minute later Clayton Micallef made it 2-2.

But the Yellow-Reds kept pushing forward and secured the points with late goals from Glenn Brincat (78) and Timmy Thomas (86).

San Ġwann and Siġġiewi were involved in a balanced encounter with the former coming out on top 3-2. The match burst to life in an eventful four-minute spell in the first half. Jason Camilleri put Siġġiewi ahead on 24 minutes but the Saints turned the result in their favour with quickfire goals from Shawn Vella (27) and David Caruana (28).

Mark Camilleri restored parity on 47 minutes but it was San Ġwann who had the final say with Bruno Ferraz snatching the winner on 79 minutes.

Fgura scored a goal in each half to beat Mellieħa 2-0 at the Sirens Stadium.

Joseph Dalli gave Fgura the lead on 11 minutes and Joseph Okon-kwo added a second 10 minutes from time.
