The government has appointed Marlene Bonnici as permanent secretary for EU funds in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Ms Bonnici, who assumed her new office last week, joined the public service in 1989 as a teacher after she obtained a first class degree in education from the University of Malta.

In 1992, she joined the Diplomatic Service and was posted as first secretary at the Maltese Embassy in Bonn, Germany and then to the Maltese Embassy in Brussels.

In 2001, Ms Bonnici was appointed director of the Regional Policy Directorate within the Office of the Prime Minister and was responsible for the planning and coordination of a number of EU and bilateral financial instruments. Three years later, she was named Director General of the Planning and Priorities Coordination Department and head of the Managing Authority, a position she held for the last seven years.
