Victoria Hotspurs chalked up a convincing 4-1 win over rivals SK Victoria Wanderers to secure their top-division status.

The Hotspurs raced into a 3-0 first-half lead following two goals from Kalin Ganchev and one from Osama Madah.

The Wanderers, who were playing their final league match this season, pulled one back on 53 minutes through Ige Adesina.

However, the Hotspurs were on top for long stretches and sealed the issue with a fourth goal on 79 minutes through Justin Azzopardi.

In another match, the already-doomed St Lawrence Spurs completed their championship commitments on a positive note after a 4-2 win over Xewkija Tigers.

This was also the Tigers’ last match of the championship. However, they will now be involved in a play-off with the runners-up in Division Two for a place in the top flight next season.

Xewkija had the better start and opened the scoring after just five minutes through Paul Rapa. However, the Saints hit back strongly and turned the tide in their favour with two goals by Charles Mercieca, the second from a penalty.

Jonathan Micallef and Hugo Seco put the Spurs 4-1 up by the 55th minute. Xewkija scored their second goal in the 76th minute through Clayton Hili.

Division Two

The last day of the Division Two campaign produced an important 2-1 victory for Xagħra United in their top-of-the-table clash with Żebbuġ Rovers. As these two teams finished on equal points, a decider is needed to determine the title winners.

Xagħra opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Johann Attard.

Żebbuġ, for whom a draw would have been enough to win the Division Two title, tried to hit back but failed to threaten the Xagħra goal.

Nine minutes into the second half, the Blues doubled their lead with another Attard goal before suffering a setback when Josef Galea was sent off for a second bookable offence 13 minutes from time.

Żebbuġ surged forward and re-opened the issue nine minutes from time when Joe Hili drove the ball home from the penalty spot. However, Xagħra held tight to defend their one-goal lead until the final whistle.

In another match, Oratory Youths inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Kerċem Ajax to finish third in the final standings.

Oratory spent most of the first period in their half but piled the pressure on Kerċem after the break. They scored three times through Martin Cremona (50), substitute Joseph Grech (78) and Francesco Cini (81) to secure the points.

Qala rounded up their com-mitments with their first win of the season after beating Għarb 1-0.

Joseph Muscat scored Qala’s winner midway through the first period.
