The reply by Albert Buttigieg, CEO of the Housing Authority, entitled Housing Schemes For The Young (July 19) justified what Żminijietna had said in its letter published on June 26, that “the subsidies offered by the government and the housing authority under the ‘more than just a roof’ scheme are positive but lack important aspects as they do not address several problems faced by young couples when buying their first property”.
Żminijietna thanks the CEO for confirming the validity of our comments when concluding in his statement that “in the coming weeks the authority will be launching another scheme aimed at first-time buyers”. In fact, that scheme has just been launched. This means that, as Żminijietna had remarked, the existing schemes needed to be improved to address the outstanding problems faced by first-time buyers.
Żminijietna had appealed for these shortcomings to be tackled in the interests of social justice.
We welcome the new scheme that offers more reasonable interest rates to first-time buyers.
