This weekend, the local J70 fleet will be back out on the water and each team fighting hard for a podium position in the Simon Estates regatta.
The J70 is a 22ft racing keel boat which has been adopted as the world’s Grand Prix class for the sports boats and Malta is no exception.
It is a one design class, all boats are identical so it is up to the crew to create the winning factor.
This aspect has attracted Malta’s top sailors to compete in the J70 class.
In fact, the competing teams are made up of past Rolex Middle Sea Race winners, GSSE medallists and other top sailors.
With five teams taking part this weekend, the Simon Estates regatta will be tightly-fought and each boat has a chance for the top placings.
The teams vying for the honours will be Artie (skipper Lee Satariano), Globe Ground (Benji Borg), RLR (Peter Micallef), Otra Vez (Martin Meachen) and Comanche Raider XS (Jonathan Diamantino).
The series will be split in two sections, a qualifying race along the Sliema front and a final series raced inside Marsamxett harbour.
Both will count for the overall position but the final count for double. Spectators may watch the final at Ta’ Xbiex Creek between 15.30 and 17.00 tomorrow.
