The tourism authority’s ban on cliff jumping from Cominotto has been welcomed by the Federation of English Language Teaching Organisations.

The island of Cominotto is to be cordoned off so that boats will no longer be able to anchor there and the police will be present to deter youngsters from jumping off high points.

Last summer alone, about 10 people were injured in the daredevil stunt despite signs put up warning of serious injury or death.

Feltom said the Maltese islands were drawing more interest in cliff diving from both locals and foreigners. It said its member schools had always highlighted the risks associated with the activity and even launched educational campaigns targeting foreigners studying English.

While it would continue raising awareness, the Malta Tourism Authority’s initiative and the presence of police were expected to deter cliff diving, Feltom said
