The 2013 Equestrian Festival was held at the Marsa racetrack, yesterday.
The event consisted of various activities including pony races, polo tournament, show jumping, six finals for trotters and a final for flat horses.
In flat racing, Kimberley Downs (Michael Sultana) gained its sixth win of the year and a fifth in a row on the way to winning the Coronation Cup.
This seven-year-old American runner upped its pace from the outside with 400m to go and finished first more than one length ahead of Timolin (Jean Paul Caruana) and Gold As Good (Eric Zammit). Da-rielli (Charles Pace) was fourth.
Eight horses lined up for the Premier Class race.
As expected, it was Totti T Dream the fastest in the initial stages, opening a half-length’s lead from Madam Di Poggio (Shawn Portelli) and Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri).
But with some 300m from the finishing line, Totti T Dream slowed down its pace and was overtaken by Absolut Spender (Mark Desira) which went on to secure its fifth win of the year in front of Vejby Boom, Madam di Poggio and Oran (Carmelo Farrugia) in that order.
Absolut Spender clocked an average time of 1.13.2” per kilometre.
In the Gold Class final, favourite Charm Hammering (Gilbert Farrugia) led all the way before registering a second consecutive win at the racetrack, almost half-a-length better off than runner-up Phenix De La Roque (Frenċu Cassar).
Power Night Star (Charles Degiorgio) and Pan des Couperies (Charles Camilleri) followed behind in third and fourth positions. Charm Hammering registered the same average time as that of Absolut Spender.
