Labour’s master of ceremonies and television presenter Ray Azzopardi has been appointed Malta’s Ambassador to Belgium, Times of Malta has confirmed.

Mr Azzopardi will take up his post on October 21, according to an official document issued yesterday by the Foreign Affairs Ministry and seen by this newspaper. His term expires at the end of September 2016.

Mr Azzopardi is a veteran in the media industry, having previously worked for the national television station and later for Labour’s One TV.

He was the coordinator of Labour’s election campaign events, including mass meetings.

He refused to comment when contacted yesterday, referring this newspaper to the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Questions sent to the ministry, however, remained unanswered by the time of going to print. The ministry was asked about his experience and qualifications to be an ambassador.

The posting order issued yesterday also confirms the appointment of Patrick Cole, a director of business development within the Kenneth De Martino Group of Companies, as the new ambassador of Malta to Kuwait.

He will take up his post on November 15 for three years.

John Aquilina has been appointed High Commissioner to India and will be based in New Delhi from November 4 until the end of October 2016.

The document also refers to the termination of service by US Ambassador Joseph Cole and ambassador to Poland Godwin Montanaro. Mr Cole has taken up a post of permanent secretary within the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The first secretary at the Maltese embassy in Poland, Christianne Caruana, has also relinquished her post.

Martin Valentino, ambassador posted at The Hague, has had his term extended to the end of March next year.
